Packing tips for the Procrastinators and the unorganized

Written by Moveforfree on December 8, 2010 – 3:57 pm -

If you are anything like me then you always wait to the last minute to pack when you move.  Then you are left with scrambling to get everything organized and end up accidentally packing the cat.

Here are my top 10 packing tips for the lazy procrastinator and the unorganized.

10) Gather all of your packing material before you start packing.  That way you won’t have to stop in the middle of your packing party to run out and get more supplies.  Unless of course it is supplies of the refreshing nature.

9) Before you start packing sort out all the stuff you either want to keep, throw away, give away or sell if you are going to have a garage sale.

8 ) Make sure all of your boxes weigh less than 75 pounds.  If they are over 75 pounds they will be considered two man boxes.

7) Pack your heavier items on the bottom of your boxes.  That means don’t pack your box like this: light bulbs, bread, a carton of eggs then your brick collection.

6) On that note, I pack all of my books in many small boxes.  That way they aren’t too heavy for the movers to carry.

5) Stuff your crevices with soft materials such as: gloves, hats, scarves, sheets and hand towels.  That will save you some money on packing material.

4) If a box has breakable items it, be sure to label it FRAGILE. (Must be Italian) Also, label your boxes with what room you wish the movers to set them in.

3) Keep a screwdriver and/ or a hammer handy.  There is always things you need to set up on your first night.  You don’t want to go crazy looking for your tools when you’re trying to put together your furniture.

2) If you are going to use bags for your linens make sure they are the ones that streeeeeeetch!

1) For the convenience of the movers and the protection of your belongings; make sure you tape all of your boxes flat.  This makes then easier to pack in the truck and protects the precious belongings inside the boxes.

There you go!  My top 10 packing tips for the procrastinators and the unorganized.  No you can go back to watching videos of cats.

Saving money on boxes and packing material.

Written by Moveforfree on December 1, 2010 – 2:57 pm -

So we all know by now that moving is super stressful. With so much to do, you don’t even want to think about where you are going to find boxes or buying packing material.

boxes

Here are a couple of tips to make your box, packing material- finding adventures less stressful.  Now all you have to worry about is what kind of white you want to paint your new bedroom; eggshell or pearl?

  • Liquor stores have great boxes.  Not only are they super sturdy, they are great to hold glassware because they have the nifty divider in it.  Plus, the shopkeepers are usually eager to give them away for free.
  • Grocery stores are also great places to find boxes.  Go in when they are stocking the shelves and they will gladly give you their boxes.
  • Try a recycling site like freecylce.org, which provides a list of stuff people are giving away for free in your area.  People are always trying to get rid of their boxes.  Also, when your move is over you can find someone else on there that may need them.
  • Packing material is easier to come by then you think.  You know all those unused plastic grocery bags crowding your closet?  Those make a perfect scratch and break resistant material.
  • Instead of buying a ton of newspapers pick up a bunch of the free papers at your local post office, grocery store or wherever they give those papers away.  (Just be sure to leave some for the people that actually do read them.)
  • One thing you don’t really want to skimp on though is packing tape.  Good tape can really make or “break” your precious belongings.  (hahaha like my pun?)

Now since you of course used moveforfree.com to find your new apartment and move your stuff for free, you just saved yourself A TON of money!  Three cheers for saving money!

How to (Correctly) Pack

Written by Moveforfree on January 25, 2010 – 3:04 pm -

In the past 6 years I have moved 4 times.  One time across country.  And the other 3 within the same city.  By now I would have to call myself an expert mover.  Especially an expert packer.

I officially present to you… Becky’s “certified” expert packing advice.

  1. First be sure to get boxes for free!
  2. About 2- 3 months before you move, start going through your stuff and figure out what you can either; trash, giveaway or keep.  (Including clothes.)  If you haven’t worn something in like 5 years it’s probably a good time to donate it to your local charity.
  3. Once you have gone through all your stuff, you can start packing things that you don’t necessarily use everyday, i.e. books, off season clothing, and nic- nacts.
  4. Make sure you tape the bottom of the boxes so they don’t fall apart when you pick them up.
  5. Don’t pack your boxes too heavy.  When packing books, for example, spread them out over a couple of boxes.  Mix your heavy objects with some light ones.  Put the lighter items on top.
  6. Use some sort of packing material for your fragile items.  Newspaper or bubble wrap work great.  I like to get the free newspapers at the grocery store.  (Some people don’t like to use newspaper, because the newsprint tends to rub off.)
  7. Be sure to label your boxes.  Sometimes it helps to label them with what room they will be going in.  Make sure to mark “Fragile” on the boxes that need a little extra care.
  8. I like to write what is in the boxes on the outside.  This is good when you move and don’t remember where exactly you put your hammer.
  9. Don’t pack your cleaning supplies!  This will be the last thing you need in your old apartment and the first thing you need in your new place.
  10. Set aside a box or a bag with a change of clothes, toiletries, TP, and anything else you may need for the first night in your new place.

Boxes, boxes, boxes, etc…

Written by Moveforfree on November 25, 2009 – 2:34 pm -

I think Jerry Seinfeld said it best….

seinfeldPhoto by Alan Light

“When You’re moving your whole world becomes boxes. That’s all you think about is boxes. Boxes, where are there boxes? You just wander down the street going in and out of stores. Are there boxes here? Have you seen any boxes? I mean it’s all you think about. You can’t even talk to people because you can’t concentrate… Just after a while you become like really into it you can smell them. You walk into a store. There’s boxes here. Don’t tell me you don’t have boxes… I can SMELL them…”*

Isn’t that the truth. Nobody likes to actually pay for boxes. So your life becomes consumed with trying to find boxes. I used to work in childcare and always had access to a lot of great boxes. But what if you don’t work somewhere like that. What if there are NEVER any boxes at your job?

Well… I have a couple of great suggestions for you then!

Two great places to get boxes are grocery stores or liquor stores. Liquor stores usually have pretty good quality boxes since their products are mostly glass. And usually if you just ask the store clerk or managers they will just give it to you without having to pay anything. Boxes are a pain for store employees to break down and throw away so they usually are pretty happy to get rid of them.

http://www.moversdirectory.com/ warns you to totally inspect any boxes you get from the grocery store. Insect eggs and insects such as roaches can travel in food boxes.

Another place I HIGHLY recommend is http://www.freecycle.org/. This is a AWESOME site. Their mission “is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community.” All you have to do is type in your city and do a search for moving boxes. People are always wanting to give away their moving boxes. Then when you all done with your move you can put up a post about wanting to give away your boxes. It’s a GREAT way to recycle, get, and give your moving boxes.

And of course there is always craigslist. People always giving away free boxes on there.

Use your imagination on where to find boxes. Once you start looking for them… they start appearing everywhere!

Good luck!
