Small space ≠ small decorating
Written by Moveforfree on December 22, 2010 – 2:39 pm -Last weekend I went to a Christmas party at a friend’s apartment. As we were driving up towards their building my boyfriend asked me, “which one was theirs again?” When I saw this balcony looming up ahead I had a strange feeling that this was indeed their apartment.

Our friends live in an about a 700 square foot apartment and they made their small space look beautiful for Christmas.
Here are some ideas I gathered while I was in their apartment.
1) Can’t have blow up animals because you have no yard to put them in? Not true…. just look for the smaller ones at the store. This cool bear sat on their patio table so he could peek over the edge of the balcony.

2) In this particular apartment there was a shelf that the couple usually used for picture frames and such but during Christmas time it was turned into this beautiful Christmas village.

3) Dress up a mail or small side table!

4) Who said lights were just for the tree or outside? String them up all around your living room.

5) Our friends did a beautiful job on decorating their tree! If you have high ceilings buy a tall skinny tree and just adorn it with decorations to make it look fuller. No room to put a tree? Try rearranging your furniture to accommodate it. Or you can always buy a table top tree. These take up hardly any space and are still festive!

So cheers! And here’s to your decorating adventures. From everyone at moveforfree we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas!!

Normal vs Awesome Amenities
Written by Moveforfree on December 15, 2010 – 4:23 pm -When you are looking to move into a new apartment community one thing you may look for are what kind of amenities that property has. An amenity in this sense can be described as “any feature that provides comfort, convenience, or pleasure.” Some properties use this definition in the simplest of ways.
Common Apartment Amenities
- dishwasher
- microwave
- normal sized pool
- garbage disposal
- ceiling fan
- storage
- patio/ balcony
Then there are those communities that provide not so normal awesome amenities that can really draw in the interests of potential residents.
Awesome/ No so normal amenities
- maid service
- coffee bar
- movie theater room
- sauna
- racquetball court
- garden tub
- self- cleaning ovens
- putting green
- car washing station (with vacuums
- dog park
Another awesome thing is… that you can find apartments with these type of amenities on moveforfree.com.

Packing tips for the Procrastinators and the unorganized
Written by Moveforfree on December 8, 2010 – 3:57 pm -If you are anything like me then you always wait to the last minute to pack when you move. Then you are left with scrambling to get everything organized and end up accidentally packing the cat.

Here are my top 10 packing tips for the lazy procrastinator and the unorganized.
10) Gather all of your packing material before you start packing. That way you won’t have to stop in the middle of your packing party to run out and get more supplies. Unless of course it is supplies of the refreshing nature.
9) Before you start packing sort out all the stuff you either want to keep, throw away, give away or sell if you are going to have a garage sale.
8 ) Make sure all of your boxes weigh less than 75 pounds. If they are over 75 pounds they will be considered two man boxes.
7) Pack your heavier items on the bottom of your boxes. That means don’t pack your box like this: light bulbs, bread, a carton of eggs then your brick collection.
6) On that note, I pack all of my books in many small boxes. That way they aren’t too heavy for the movers to carry.
5) Stuff your crevices with soft materials such as: gloves, hats, scarves, sheets and hand towels. That will save you some money on packing material.
4) If a box has breakable items it, be sure to label it FRAGILE. (Must be Italian) Also, label your boxes with what room you wish the movers to set them in.
3) Keep a screwdriver and/ or a hammer handy. There is always things you need to set up on your first night. You don’t want to go crazy looking for your tools when you’re trying to put together your furniture.
2) If you are going to use bags for your linens make sure they are the ones that streeeeeeetch!
1) For the convenience of the movers and the protection of your belongings; make sure you tape all of your boxes flat. This makes then easier to pack in the truck and protects the precious belongings inside the boxes.
There you go! My top 10 packing tips for the procrastinators and the unorganized. No you can go back to watching videos of cats.

Saving money on boxes and packing material.
Written by Moveforfree on December 1, 2010 – 2:57 pm -So we all know by now that moving is super stressful. With so much to do, you don’t even want to think about where you are going to find boxes or buying packing material.

Here are a couple of tips to make your box, packing material- finding adventures less stressful. Now all you have to worry about is what kind of white you want to paint your new bedroom; eggshell or pearl?
- Liquor stores have great boxes. Not only are they super sturdy, they are great to hold glassware because they have the nifty divider in it. Plus, the shopkeepers are usually eager to give them away for free.
- Grocery stores are also great places to find boxes. Go in when they are stocking the shelves and they will gladly give you their boxes.
- Try a recycling site like freecylce.org, which provides a list of stuff people are giving away for free in your area. People are always trying to get rid of their boxes. Also, when your move is over you can find someone else on there that may need them.
- Packing material is easier to come by then you think. You know all those unused plastic grocery bags crowding your closet? Those make a perfect scratch and break resistant material.
- Instead of buying a ton of newspapers pick up a bunch of the free papers at your local post office, grocery store or wherever they give those papers away. (Just be sure to leave some for the people that actually do read them.)
- One thing you don’t really want to skimp on though is packing tape. Good tape can really make or “break” your precious belongings. (hahaha like my pun?)
Now since you of course used moveforfree.com to find your new apartment and move your stuff for free, you just saved yourself A TON of money! Three cheers for saving money!
